Íæż½ã½ã

Íæż½ã½ã’s Concert Band will appear in concert at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 3, in the University Theatre. The Concert Band will be joined by the Honors Brass Quintet and piano soloist T.J. Senters of Beaumont, a student in the Texas Academy of Leadership in the Humanities at Íæż½ã½ã. The program includes selections from Gustav Holst, Arturo Marquez, Béla Bartók and many more. Admission is free.

Eric Shannon, assistant professor in the Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music, conducts the Concert Band, which has 62 members.

“We are really excited to share this music with the community,” said Shannon. “Our students have been working very hard, and I think people will recognize that in the quality of their performance. We have some remarkable young musicians here at Íæż½ã½ã, yet we are always pushing them to grow as artists and performers. I think Thursday’s concert will really demonstrate our recent growth."

Íæż½ã½ã’s Honors Brass Quintet opens the program with “Fanfare” by Paul Dukas and Holst’s “Second Suite in F.” The student quintet is composed of Matthew Dueppen of Woodland Hills, Calif., and Will Poppe, Beaumont, on trumpet; Erica Long, Nederland, horn; Carl Woodall, Vidor, trombone; and Denzel Richard, Beaumont, tuba.

Most notable from the Concert Band performance will be the “Danzon No. 2” by Latin-American composer Arturo Marquez, arranged for wind band by Oliver Nickel. Other selections include “Jabberwocky,” an orchestral interpretation of the famous poem by Lewis Carroll, composed by Íæż½ã½ã alumnus Leon Steward; “Slane,” an Irish folk song conducted by graduate assistant Kaila Spoonmore of Hamshire-Fannett; and an arrangement of “Amazing Grace” by Frank Ticheli.
