Spam

What is spam?

"Email spam," "Junk email" or "Spam mail", usually referred to as just "Spam", are unwanted, unsolicited, commercial email messages, normally sent in bulk to a large distribution list of recipients.

Many spam emails contain URLs to websites and can be annoying as well as potentially risky because they can contain bogus offers that can cost you time and/or money.

Tips to Avoid and Minimize Spam

  1. Use common sense and limit where you give out your email address.
  2. Be aware when displaying your email address in public. This includes chat rooms, blogs or social networking sites. Spammers use the web to harvest email addresses.
  3. Only download trusted attachments.
  4. Look for pre-checked boxes that sign you up for email updates from the company or its partners.
  5. See if the privacy policy allows the company to sell your email address.
  6. Be wary of websites that offer free deals but want your email.
